What a Barbed Wire Fence can do?

There's a famous quote by Jan Gehl (a Danish Architect and Urban Design consultant):

"First we shape the cities — then they shape us."

Which means that the physical layout of neighborhoods, cities, and homes has environmental impact on human beings as it dictates their daily habits, mental health, and social behavior.

In todays time, if anyone says that they haven't heard of it or aren't aware of it. Then all I can say is that I am deeply disappointed on how naive they are and I am concerned about them being among the decision makers of our society or a family unit even, with all due respect.

This being said, you can try to imagine my response when I saw the recent physical intervention (barbed wire fencing) in DHA Phase 5, Lahore. Thanks to Ar. Nabeela Nazir for raising this issue. I mean the area known to be having elite class living there, also most notable Architectural firms have this installed in the area.

Now let me share some of my thoughts:

  1. 1. Why do they need wire fencing in an area that's supposed to have civilized behavior on its own?

  2. 2. Why a civilized area would do anything like this to discourage free pedestrian movement in the area?

  3. 3. Do people only use automobiles in the area to commute and none of them travel on foot?

  4. 4. Is it too difficult to have automobiles and foot traffic in balance in our city?

  5. 5. Was there no other way to address on how to create balance or was there no consideration or intention to create balance?

  6. Most importantly, what if someone fell on it by mistake, like someone travelling on bike or bicycle? (Even thought of it is scary for a fellow human being)

I was willing to understand but I am unwilling to accept such physical interventions in my city anymore that psychologically either challenge people or discourage them to do anything that might help them move around the city without any danger coming their way on the streets.

You can see in the videos below that people are travelling on foot still and struggling too.

You see a woman trying to cross the wire fencing. Captured by Ar. Nabeela Nazir

In this video, you can notice men standing on the median which means they did somehow crossed the wire fencing. But how? Captured by Ar. Ifrah Bukhari

I also believe that this wire will psychologically encourage automobile drivers to travel faster knowing that no one will cross the road anytime because there's barbed wire here. The issue is not pedestrians, the issue always and everywhere is about the traffic movement, the speed of cars, the dependance on cars. The moment you sit behind the steering wheel and engine starts, it's only you and your car covering the distance from one destination to another. The other people normally becomes unimportant or secondary.

I am worried that where our city is going despite the awareness being raised globally? Are we ever going to make any progress in terms of changed social behaviors that is encouraging and supportive to our fellow human beings and their health or are we going to keep going down because we have to rush to somewhere (Allah knows where)?

Do share your feedback on how you want your city to support and dictate your daily habit, social behaviors and other environmental impacts.
